Dog Training Classes

Bring out the scholar in your best friend

Whether you're looking for general basic manners, life skills or some focused work on one or more desired behaviours, our unique approach to classes allows you to build a customised program for your dog.

Scholars in Collars classes are a bit different in quite a few ways…

If you’ve been looking around, you’ll have noticed lots of very long, multi-week dog training classes. We know you’re busy, so we take a unique approach to getting you results:
  • Real-life training. Good behaviour in the classroom is nice, but good behaviour in the real world is better. All of our classes are built around real-world scenarios, and some even take place in the real world, too.
  • Small class size. Our classes range in size from 4 to 6 dogs, allowing for plenty of personalised coaching from our experienced, supportive trainers.
  • Short, needs-based classes. Most of our classes come in workshop format, ranging from 1 to 3 weeks and focused on key topics like coming when called, loose leash walking, or stopping unwanted and dangerous chase behaviours.
  • You pick and choose. You can take just one workshop on the behaviour you most need. You can start with our 5-week basic manners Life Skills foundation course. You can create your own program by putting together the workshops that best suit your training goals. It’s up to you!
  • Highly qualified instructors. Our instructors are highly credentialed professional dog trainers with many years of experience. We share a dedication to continuing professional education, positive training results, and positive training experiences.
  • All positive training. Advances in canine behavioural science have given us modern, force-free training methods that are effective, fun, and stress-free for dog and human alike – and we take great advantage!

Please note: Dog must be dog- and people-friendly to attend our highly interactive classes. If your dog is uncomfortable around fellow dogs or strangers, private training will provide a more appropriate and effective platform for training success.

Life Skills: Basic Manners Dog Training Class

Designed to build a well-behaved canine companion you can enjoy at home and take anywhere, we work on the basics: walking nicely on lead, coming when called, no jumping on family or visitors, settling on your mat, waiting at doorways, greeting fellow dogs politely, sit/drop/stay, and leaving things that don’t belong to you. Phew! That’s a big list. All in 5 weeks, you ask? Yep! By focusing on real-life scenarios, we quickly lay foundations you can build on at home or in our innovative short workshops.

Meeting Manners

Tired of your dog jumping to greet strangers or plowing in to make new dog friends? This workshop will teach your dog to wait to say hello, and then to do so with grace. She’ll learn to greet people and fellow dogs on cue and to do so politely, with a proper sniff for dogs and a nice sit for humans. And when it’s not a good time to say hello, she’ll know how to walk on by, happily focused on you.

Calm. Controlled. Centred.

Living with an excitable, active, or reactive dog? One who becomes over-excited when you get ready for a walk, whines in the car or while on walks, knocks visitors over in her enthusiasm, lunges or barks at other dogs while on leash, becomes frantic when she sees other dogs at play, or barks at you for attention? This three-week workshop is for you. Your dog can learn to be calm, controlled, and centred in the face of all things exciting, and we’ll teach you how to get her there.
